Is India safe for kids or not ?
I have great admiration for Sundar and his blog. In the post titled "Dazed and Confused" he talks about his daughter sitting in an auto and the auto driver not realizing this (or did he know about it...) took off but others in the auto stand recognized the kid and brought the kid back. All's well that ends well right and one would have thought Sundar would have some nice words for the autodrivers who looked out for him. But no Sundar says and I quote
"India is nowhere safe for kids (most of you must be familiar with what is going on in the Capital)!"
This is in reference to Nithari Killings. I feel that his all encompassing verdict that India is nowhere safe is just too ridiculous. Of all nations India is still one of those where people are always on the look out for one another. Heck Sundar and his wife grew up in India, albeit safely right. Or is it that when one is accustomed to the heightened safety measures in America, life in the normal lane looks so unsafe ?

In the 80s a kid was at school. The kid's father had gone out of station. The kid's mom did not know the way to the school (8 kms from home). Around 11.30 the school got the news Indira Gandhi was shot dead.
Shortly afterwards, the situation outside the school obviously turned violent. Sikh shops were looted. There was a curfew like situation.
The kid did not know that his dad was out of station and so was waiting for his dad to comeand pick him up. It was 3.30 and the kid still in school not knowing what to do.
At home the kid's mom was wailing but had no clue what to do. Those days telephone was a facility reserved for elites.
But a friendly neighbor decided to venture out, borrowed a vehicle (no public transport) and came all the way to the school notwithstanding in that troubled situation and brought the kid home.
That kid is writing this comment now.
India is unsafe for kids, yeah right!

pk,
I myself have received such care. When my cousin was at Perambur station, a friend of my father came to pick me up at Don Bosco Perambur to meet him and my father. But my friends wouldn't let me go with him even after I told them that I knew this guy. They then said they would follow me until they saw my father and they did followed me and this guy at a safe distance and only when they saw my father did they leave. I was studying 11th there and such was care and lookout that they exhibited for a fellow classmate.
